Recently I was the victim of a scam. A well-known writer contacted me (or so I thought) to extend a hand of friendship. After asking me about my work they offered to introduce me to a literary agency who duly offered to help me publish my novel for $199.
A name was provided, a Nigerian name on PayPal into whose account I had to deposit the money.
I found it weird that a Scottish author would have a Nigerian accountant and asked about it on the Scottish author’s fan page, only to hear that he had never contacted me!
Feeling like a total fool I informed the scammer who had the chutzpah to ask to continue their “assistance”.
On the plus side at least I didn’t lose any money but I’m wondering how many writers are approached with scams to extort money.
